About the Book

In the mist-shrouded fishing village of Porthenev, a ravenous evil is lurking.

When sabotage threatens the local fishing fleet, the desperate community turns to private investigator Blake Hollow—on the advice of her estranged father. Taking the case means opening the door to a relationship she’s tried to leave behind, and a past she’s not ready to forgive. But Blake must set her feelings aside to uncover the truth, because this is not the work of a mere vandal.

A sunken trawler and mutilated seabirds are only the beginning. When a fisherman vanishes, leaving behind signs of brutal violence, Blake realises she’s tracking someone with a bloody vendetta—and that the fishermen are hiding a deadly secret.

As winter gales batter the shores and dense fog cloaks the empty streets, Blake must hunt a predator whose hunger for revenge has spiralled into something terrifyingly savage. But in this ghost town, where innocence is just an illusion, solving the case could make her the final course of the killer’s twisted feast.

Perfect for fans of Sharon Bolton and Peter May, The Dark Below plunges readers into a maritime nightmare where buried sins and unrelenting fury collide.

Malcolm did it again with “The Dark Below”.

When Blake Hollow was hired by Jasper Rowe to investigate and find out who was sabotaging the fishermen’s boats in the harbor, she didn’t realize what she was about to face. This book will keep you turning pages to find out what comes next as it takes from petty crime to murder and suspense.

You won’t be sorry.

Engaging story with believable characters. Plenty of tension, and the author lets you see (after a while) how and why the authorities were sometimes looking in the wrong direction. There are some pretty graphic scenes, so it may not be for everyone. But as a work of fiction, it pulled me right in. Looking forward to the next book already.

Generally, I enjoyed the book and thought it was well written but I thought the story line was rather grisly and far fetched at times (sorry to be a party pooper). Obviously others felt differently – maybe I have a queasier stomach?! The location of the story was clearly well researched which helped to make it ring true in many respects. Definitely worth reading but it wasn’t a story which had me gripped and desperate to finish it until I got to the last 10%. This was the first Blake Hollow story I have read so maybe I don’t yet ‘know’ the lead character well enough.

A superbly gripping novel right from the start. When investigating some mysterious acts of sabotage at the harbour, PI Blake Hollow soon finds herself in the middle of a fast moving series of grisly and hideous events. Will the dark secret she has discovered lead her to the perpetrator? Malcolm Richards is adept at describing both characters and events with clarity and The Dark Below is definitely up there with the best.

Hired to find the culprit in a series of acts of vandalism, Blake finds herself in the midst of murder. This book is definitely a page turner. Characters are well-developed. All in all, I’d say that Me. Richardz has a winner here.
