Each Thursday I ask ten questions to authors of mystery, thriller and suspense about their books, their inspirations and how to get away with the perfect murder. In the hot seat this week is... Diane Capri.
Born in Alabama, Diane grew up in a small German-American farming town north of Detroit, living a book-filled childhood and following most of life’s rules. She graduated from law school and worked her way into the top 1% of U.S. lawyers.
In 1995, her largest client filed for bankruptcy protection, destroying her by-the-book life. The opportunity to write what she loved beckoned, so Diane decided to rewrite life's rules – to suit herself.
Her first novels were successful and suspenseful Florida mysteries featuring women who deliver justice with a splash of humour. A cocktail fuelled conversation with Diane's friend and #1 international bestselling author Lee Child in 2009, prompted the question, Where is Jack Reacher? Since then, and with Lee's blessing, Diane has been answering that with a series of novels.
Q1. Hello Diane! Can You Tell Us A Bit About Yourself And Your Books?
I'm a recovering lawyer. Married forever to a wonderful guy. We're snowbirds (Tampa and Traverse City, Michigan) and we have a terrific little schnauzer named Miki who delights us constantly.
I write four mystery/thriller/suspense series: The Hunt for Jack Reacher Thrillers, the Jess Kimball Thrillers, The Willa Carson mysteries, and the Heir Hunter series featuring Michael Flint.
Q2. What Three Things Should Readers Expect From Diane Capri Novel?
Readers tell me they always get an exciting, fast-paced story with characters they love (or love to hate) involved in a fascinating plot with loads of atmosphere. That's exactly what I'm shooting for every time.
Q3. Can You Tell Us About Your Main Character?
I'm best known for my Hunt for Jack Reacher series, which stars FBI Special Agent Kim Otto and her partner, Agent Carlos Gaspar.
They have been assigned to fill in the gaps on Jack Reacher's personnel file because he's being considered for a classified assignment. What they learn before the assignment even starts is that hunting Reacher is dangerous business!
Q4. If Your Books Were Turned Into Movies, Who Would Play Your Main Characters?
Kim Otto is the U.S. born fourth child of a German-American father and his Vietnamese war bride. She resembles her mother in appearance, but she feels German on the inside and 100% American because she was born and raised in Michigan and comes from a big family. Probably the closest actress to Otto's appearance is Lucy Liu.
Q5. How Do You Come Up With The Ideas For Your Stories – What Is Your Inspiration?
I always joke and say I buy them from ideas.com. But the truth is that ideas come from everywhere and I don't always know the origin.
It can be something I see, or hear, or dream, or read. Or conversations with others may spark great stories for me.
Q6. What Do You Enjoy Most About Writing Thrillers?
Everything! I do a lot of research for my books and I enjoy learning new things. I also enjoy delighting readers and I hold my breath with each new release until I find out what they think.
Q7. What Are You Working On Right Now?
Besides the launch of my latest novel, Jack the Reaper, I'm finishing the edits to my next Jess Kimball Thriller, Fatal Bond, which releases in November.
Q8. Who Are Your Favourite Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Authors?
I have way too many to list, but Lee Child, of course! Michael Connelly, Harlan Coben and many more. Many of my friends are authors, so it's hard to choose.
Q9. You're Being Sent To A Desert Island. You Can Only Take One Book With You. What Is It?
Yikes! Only one? That's torture! Something really, really long so I won't have to reread so often. Perhaps The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens. I haven't read that one since before I entered law school.
Q10. How Do You Get Away With The Perfect Murder?
Be very, very careful about DNA.
