TEN QUESTIONS WITH... MICHAEL PARKER
Every Thursday I ask ten questions to authors of mystery, thriller and suspense about their books, their inspirations and how to get away with the perfect murder. In the hot seat this week is... Michael Parker.
Michael is a British author of several stand-alone thrillers, as well as the Marcus Blake series.
Q1. Hello Michael! Can You Tell Us A Bit About Yourself And Your Books?
I have been a published author for many years with eleven titles to my credit, nine of which have been traditionally published. I live in West Sussex with my wife, Pat. We have been married for fifty-seven years. I write ‘stand-alone’ novels, and usually describe myself as a thriller writer, but in 2015, I published a romance, Past Imperfect, the last of my traditionally published novels. My latest release, Where the Wicked Dwell, was published this year, 2017. I call writing my “Sweet Curse”; I enjoy writing but not the rejections.
Q2. What Three Things Should Readers Expect From A Michael Parker Novel?
Difficult to put down. Surprise. Pure enjoyment.
Q3. Can You Tell Us About Your Character Marcus Blake?
Marcus Blake has appeared in only two of my books. He is a financially independent, free spirit, and runs a security agency in London, but without a great deal of interest in the business. His nemesis is Sir Giles Cavendish, former head of MI6, and it is because of this man that Marcus finds himself in the scrapes he gets into.
Q4. If Your Books Were Turned Into Movies, Who Would Play Your Main Character?
I based Marcus Blake on Matthew McConaughey, although that was when the actor was a lot younger.
Q5. How Do You Come Up With The Ideas For Your Stories – What Is Your Inspiration?
I usually rely on something from the real world to inspire me. I have based my novels in Alaska 1968 (discovery of oil); British East Africa 1898 (British & German colonialism); Scotland 1943 (Nazi Wolf packs); and so on into places like North Africa, Italy, Germany, Mexico and the United States.
Q6. What Do You Enjoy Most About Writing Thrillers?
Q7. What Are You Working On Right Now?
I’m not working on anything at the moment, but have an idea knocking about in my head for another Marcus Blake thriller.
Q8. Who Are Your Favourite Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Authors?
Difficult question that: I have no favourites really, but enjoy Lee Child, David Baldacci, Peter James and Robert Harris to name a few.
Q9. You're Being Sent To A Desert Island. You Can Only Take One Book With You. What Is It?
It would have to be the bible; all the genres are there.
Q10. How Do You Get Away With The Perfect Murder?
Make sure I’m writing the plot!
